Follow Your Passion 40 Years of Passion for F1

Motorsport, it’s in our DNA

Innovation, it’s in our execution and output. And passion? It’s our life. This year we celebrate 40 years of Renault in F1, a technological and human adventure.

1977

Our F1 debut came at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone where Jean-Pierre Jabouille drove the first V6 turbo-charged F1 car, the RS01. A momentous occasion, this was the beginning of our pioneering turbo technology at a time when competitors were using naturally aspirated engines. We embraced innovation and took a risk, which no-one else believed in at the start.

1979

The year of our first F1 victory at the French Grand Prix in Dijon-Prenois. Jean-Pierre Jabouille got behind the wheel of our RS11 and drove us to the number one spot.

1997

This year marked our sixth consecutive Constructors' World Championship as engine supplier. During this period we earned 85 Grand Prix wins and five Drivers’ titles for Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve.

2005 & 2006

2005 proved to be a big year, winning our first ever Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship titles thanks to our partnership with the spirited Fernando Alonso. Alonso was then the youngest champion ever, and, in 2006, cemented our Drivers’ and Constructors’ World Championship titles.

2016

2016 saw the Renault Sport Formula One Team return to the championship with a full works effort. The regulations had changed significantly in 2014, and, in the interim, Renault developed the new V6 hybrid powertrain. Ready to make a comeback, Renault was set to conquer one of the most coveted titles in motorsport, the F1 World Championship.

2017

And this year we celebrate 40 years of passion and commitment to the victories that made us champions, and the difficult moments that made us stronger.

“What people tend to forget in Formula One is that it takes in excess of 1000 people to design, build and separate two of the fastest racing cars in the world.” Cyril Abiteboul, Managing Director of Renault Sport Formula One Team

We champion our Creators and our cars. Here’s to the next 40 years of following our passion.
